A new world, more aliens, and even more Mechs!

The Skaintz Imperium was eradicated from the backwater planet of Garm, but at great cost. The population of the world was decimated within weeks, and Garm will never be the same. At least humanity can breathe easily knowing that the mysterious aliens are all dead.... But are they? Using their natural form of communication, Skaintz radio signals did chirrup and click, however briefly. Transmissions in their ancient language now spread at the speed of light in a growing sphere, reaching farther from Garm every year. In the vast oceans of nothingness between the stars unknown things float. And they listen....

Mech 2 is the story of Neu Schweitz, a planet in a system 3.2 light years from Garm. It's a beautiful world of snow-topped mountains, green valleys and nearly a billion humans struggling with piracy and politics. Soon, however, they will be struggling for their very lives.

Mech 2 The Savant (Audible Audio Edition) B V Larson Mirron Willis Audible Studios Books Reviews

Great stuff! Haven't read so fast for awhile now. Going to check out the Star Force series which I passed on previously. I would love to see the story continue. I imagined something like this happening just after finishing
The Fryx are held responsible for creating the Skaintz and are forced to take responsibility. This happens, of course, after Droad has guided Neu Schweitz towards a strong defense. But is it strong enough? Will the Fryx come up with a suitable defense? How did the Imperium start? Will the universe be safe?
The saga continues and remains an interesting read. I thought that Larson started with some intriguing assumptions about a novel form of life and has built out the story in a different expository fashion. Each book uses the same basic background with many of the same characters but focuses on different aspects of the alien life. Keeps you wondering what is going to happen next and looking forward to getting into the next book. I recommend it to fans of this type of SF.
The book is too gruesome to read for me. The details about the Imperium for me is overboard. I read 0 and 1 and thought that with the title and the way that this was going the series would be a different tale on the concepts in I Robot or the last of the Foundation books; that the Imperium story line was a stepping stone to how the Mechs evolved. So I have put it down and with Vaughn's next Lost Ship series out will read that and probably come back to this later.
After the alien ship evaded captured and was able to make its way down on the planet. Things move very quickly. In a very short time, humans learn what is threatening the whole human race and they find that these aliens are very hard to destroy. Eventually, when faced with such situations does the human spirit rise and all squabbles are put aside to join together to defeat this unbelievable threat. Here's the story of the planet that has been invaded by an ancient alien.
This sequel follows the protagonists from the first book as they attempt to warn the rest of humanity of the dangers of the invading, insect-like Imperium. Governor Droad decides to leave Garm for Neu Schweitz in order to help protect the Nexus, which unfortunately doesn't seem to want his help. If you enjoyed the first book, then there is no reason at all to avoid this one. It is heavier with socio-political content, as Neu Schweitz is a considerably more advanced and complicated world than Garm (the frontier setting of the first book), but this is neither unpleasant nor badly executed, merely appropriate for the setting of the book. The bio-organic Imperium is even creepier in this book (mix Borg with Zerg and you get the picture) and just as bent on wiping out humanity. A good SF romp at a nice price - worth investigating, and a definite keeper if you liked the first book.
As a sequel, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the story woven by Larson. As a story in its own right, I'm not sure if it is strong enough to stand alone by itself. Read in context as a sequel though, it builds on an existing universe and gives enough to quench the thirst of die-hard fans. Again, the aliens were hideous and brutal, with a distinct conniving nature thrown in this time round. The heroes were portrayed satisfyingly and richly, struggling against enemies within and without.

That said, I found that the book's namesake - Mechs - were given a backseat role in this book which left me a bit disappointed. Additionally, I thought the demise of the alien antagonist was a little anti-climatic and felt a little rushed. The story also lacked the intensity of the first book, although that probably indicates the caliber of the first with which it is undoubtedly being compared to.
This was a quick, fun sequel... if you enjoyed the first one, you will enjoy this. For the price, I'm not going to complain about how fast a read this is, but I would say that Larson has the potential to create something much bigger and more satisfying to sink your teeth into. He is able to adeptly weave multiple viewpoints/storylines into a dialog driven narrative that doesn't leave you skimming back to the "action". There's even some very nice subtle humor combined with good insight into the human condition.

Book 3 will need to break out of the formula set in 1 and 2 in order to keep the series fresh, and I think a swerve toward a larger scale/scope, tactical confrontation would be welcome. I hope it doesn't focus to much on internal politics (as the blurb in book 2 epilog suggests), as I really don't have the feeling that's where the author's strength lies. But will definately check it out and see...
